The Food of Love at Rockliffe Hall
image

Newly open in November 2009, Rockliffe Hall (www.rockliffehall.com) in County Durham is the most exciting hotel debut in the North for many years. And for those who believe that food and romance go hand in hand, a visit to this wonderfully romantic Victorian Gothic pile, former home to the family behind the Stockton to Darlington Railway and Barclays Bank, has all the right ingredients.

The star attraction is Kenny Atkinson, Hotel Chef of the Year (2009 Catey Awards) and finalist of BBC2’s Great British Menu – who will be working his Michelin starred magic in the à la carte restaurant, The Orangery. For its first Valentine’s Day as an hotel, Rockliffe Hall is offering a one-night Celebration Package at £250.00 for two, with a five course dinner in The Orangery, with a special menu by Kenny Atkinson, as well as full use of the gorgeous spa, English breakfast - and champagne and chocolates. The final intriguing ingredient is the view of the appropriately heart-shaped tree from the restaurant .......

A hotel in the heart of Paris, for Parisians at heart everywhere
image

Le Marais is Paris’ oldest quartier, with the impossibly romantic Place des Vosges at its heart, home to the exquisite Le Pavillon de la Reine www.pavillon-de-la-reine.com, the only hotel on the square, set deep in its own secluded courtyard.

This is a hotel for couples who know and love Paris, looking for something just a little different and off the beaten track. It dates back to the 17th century, covered in ivy, and offers a truly romantic alternative…..

Check into the Suite de la Reine - where the works of Victor Hugo, Romantic writer and resident of the Place des Vosges, are evoked in the artwork, depicting facsimiles of his handwriting on the walls – and start le weekend à la française. For her – it’s down to the Spa de la Reine for Bridget Bardot’s favourite Carita facial.

Meanwhile, he spruces up in the suite, then adjourns to the honesty bar downstairs to await his queen, before escorting her across the square to the three star Michelin restaurant L’Ambroisie. Next morning, wake up to the sound of birds singing in the square. Then stroll around Le Marais for a touch of Valentine’s shopping - at the master perfumer, Christian Louis; the chocolatier - Jadis & Gourmand; and ribbons, buttons and bows at the fascinating haberdashery - Entrée des Fournisseurs ; and finally to one of the best cafés in Paris - Ma Bourgogne.
A Valentines Day package is priced from €490.00 for two and starts with a Valentines gift, a bottle of champagne and rose petals in a Junior Suite, followed by breakfast the following morning and two massages in the new Carita spa.
Pavillon de la Reine, 28 Places des Vosges, 75003 Paris.
To book: +33(0)1 40 29 19 19 / contact@pavillon-de-la-reine.com / www.pavillon-de-la-reine.com.

Falling asleep by the fire…

It doesn’t get much better than falling asleep wrapped in your lover’s arms in a four poster bed by the light of a log fire. Say no more…The atmospheric Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa in Climping West Sussex was built by the Guinness family in the 1920s using timber and stone from a medieval ruin. Oak panelled passageways, a stone chapel, a private footpath to the sea – just a five minutes walk - it’s easy to understand why this was built as a dream home. It is still one of the most romantic hotels in England with rooms starting from £210 per night.

Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa, Climping, Nr Arundel, West Sussex, BN17 5RW.

image Forget Valentine’s Day? No problem…

Catalunya in Spain celebrates its own version of Valentines Day – ‘Lover’s Day’ - on 23 April. .So there is plenty of time to get out of the dog house and explore the region’s wildly romantic capital, Barcelona. Sant Jordi (St George) is patron saint of the region and is strongly associated with the notion of chivalry. Here, he is the equivalent of St Valentine and he presides over a day of romance and the exchange of gifts between sweethearts. Traditionally, girls are given white roses while the boys get a book. And on Lovers Day, Las Ramblas - the vibrant promenade which cuts through the heart of the city, filled with musicians, street theatres, artists, and cafés – teems with row upon row of pop-up bookstalls and rose-sellers. So popular is this tradition that by the end of the day, some four million roses and 800,000 books will have been sold.

For absentminded lovers, the deeply stylish Hotel Miramar, Barcelona is offering a special Emergency Repair Kit package, guaranteed to banish any lingering resentment, available throughout April from €374 per couple.

The price includes one night in a deluxe room with fabulous views across the city and the Mediterranean Sea; a romantic bubble bath with aromatic candles, rose petals and bath salts and champagne, strawberries and chocolates on arrival (you are apologizing after all!); a candle lit dinner for two with views of the romantic Montjuïc Gardens and breakfast the following morning.
Based on two sharing and subject to availability. Hotel Miramar, Barcelona, Plaza Carlos Ibáñez 3, Barcelona.
To book: call +34 932 811 600 or visit www.hotelmiramarbarcelona.com. Additional nights at best available rate.
