Raffles Hotel, Singapore.  Opened in 1887 and one of the most famous hotels in the world, Singapore's fabled Raffles Hotel immediately conjures up romantic images of intrepid travellers.  The Writers Bar pays homage to Joseph Conrad, Noel Coward and Somerset Maugham (who have suites named after them), André Malraux, Pablo Neruda and later James A Michener.   An extensive refurbishment, unveiled in 1991, beautifully restored Raffles' 103 suites and its famed Billiard Room, Long Bar, Courtyard and Tiffin Room.  Tropical gardens have always been synonymous with Raffles Hotel. These occupy more than a quarter of the entire estate, providing a tranquil contrast to the bustling city beyond.  The peaceful sound of birdsong from the verandahs and the evocative rustle of palm branches in the breeze are infinitely restful.

Today Raffles is in the heart of Singapore’s business and historic district, just 20 minutes from Changi International Airport and a five-minute train ride on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) from Orchard Road.  The hotel offers its guests discreet state of the art technology with elegant period furnishings, oriental carpets on teak floors, original 14-foot high ceilings and shady verandahs.
